How to grow: Direct sow after frost in a spot where you'd like a tall plant with dramatic impact. This queen casts shade, so consider smaller plants in the vicinity when planting. Good soil and plenty of water result in the largest plants, but sunflowers are tenacious and succeed in less than ideal conditions. To save seeds, cover ripe flower heads with paper bags; this will keep the birds off.
